Durban & Richards Bay‘s warm Indian Ocean blue waters offer some exciting Marlin Fishing, and with the great weather on South Africa’s East Coast the season is long throughout the summer months from October through to April, with the best months from November to March. Sailfish can be caught for a much longer period from September through to June.
Blue Water Charters specialises in Billfish and Big Game fishing off Durban during the summer months.
Durban is also home to the annual Marlin Club of SA’s Billfish Tournament and Richards Bay home to the annual SADSAA Billfish Classic, both these tournaments are attended by us and spaces are available for these events each year.
We have a wide variety of Billfish in our waters · Black Marlin · Blue Marlin · Striped Marlin · Sailfish · Short bill Spearfish · Broadbill Swordfish (For the brave hearted)
Our 32ft Sport Fisher boat is comfortable for long days out at sea and well equipped for Marlin and Big Game Fishing and all our tackle is current and well maintained, we also have a huge selection of lures.
We are always busy during Marlin season with many Marlin Fishing trips which keeps us up to date of conditions.
Please understand that there is no Guarantee that we will get a Marlin on one of our trips, if it was easy then everyone would be doing it. The ratio is 1 Marlin landed for every 3 strikes, and 1 Marlin landed for every 3 trips, there are those days where it is awesome and we can get many strikes, but there are also those quiet days. We almost always get by-catch on these trips in the form of Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo. Often our clients book us for several days which is best to give you the best chance at landing your Marlin.
All our Bill fishing is strictly Catch & Release. |

By Mike Laubscher
You leave home in the early hours, before the sparrows awake, the air is crisp and fresh and there is a light breeze blowing on your face, the sky is black and the stars are clear and bright.
You make your way to the coast and it gets a little warmer on your way down, the window is open and you get the first feel of fresh air blowing on your face.
You arrive at your boat and it is methodically prepared and checked, you then swing the motors breaking the early mornings silence and make you way out feeling the fresh ocean air blowing you hair lightly.
The motors are warm now and you push the throttles forward, the boat leaps out the water towards and orange line on the horizon, the wind is now blowing in your hair and you are filled with anticipation for the day’s events, enjoying the freshness of the air, the wide open space as the sun pops its head out from the horizon and the roar of the motors as you hurtle towards the sun.
The sun then rises and makes a golden highway on the water, you here birds cry, and the water swishing past your hull. You arrive at your first way point, set your lines and make your way out towards the sun following the golden highway whist scanning the horizon for any activity.
You see something in the distance, the game is on and you head towards it, as you arrive you hear the out rigger snap, this is the moment, and the split second seems like forever as you turn around to watch the rod suddenly bend the line go tight and the reel starts to growl and you look up to see a Marlin leaping out of the water repeatedly making splashes as it hits the water, everyone on the boat is filled with adrenalin as the hook is set, scuttling around clearing the lines whilst the rod stays bent and the reel peeling line.
The fight is on….. you realise why you do it, a calm smile comes over your face and a battle of wills ensues until you get this mighty Marlin to the boat, you are excited beyond words, photographs are taken and the magnificent Marlin released.
The boat is underway again the lines are out and your excitement levels are dropping as a silence falls over the crew, and at that point you discover that this Marlin is not enough, you need another one…. you are hooked!
